This initiative generates a positive impact, as it contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions.
Ecopetrol and Neture Impact, part of VML THE COCKTAIL, have developed EcoBlocks, an innovative solution that converts waste from the Barrancabermeja refinery into bricks. These bricks are initially destined for internal works, but there is a possibility that they can be used, in the future, in the construction of social project infrastructure.

The initiative offers a circular outlet for the solid matter that results from the water filtration process at the refinery. This waste is processed to make bricks without the need for firing, eliminating the use of traditional kilns. This approach avoids carbon emissions and reduces the consumption of fossil fuel resources compared to usual construction methods.
In parallel, according to Neture Impact studies, the project represents a great opportunity to allocate the EcoBlocks to the development of social works.

In the words of Gladys Monsalve, head of the Department of Integrated Operational Risk Management at the Barrancabermeja refinery, “Our goal is to technically improve the manufacturing process of EcoBlocks to take it to other industries in the country, in order to take advantage of the construction waste and sludge, and in this way confirm our commitment to sustainability.”

Xavier Vallés, CEO of Neture Impact, notes “EcoBlocks demonstrates how creativity and innovation can drive real solutions to the great environmental challenges of this century. This project turns waste management into a strategic lever to move toward more circular production models, contributing to the fulfillment of decarbonization objectives and placing people and territory at the heart of the business.”

Finally, Leonardo Rincón, group creative director and head of art at VML Health, says that the initiative’s “bricks have been designed with three motifs inspired by Colombian pre-Hispanic art that symbolize the responsibility we have with the ecosystem: the spiral as a representation of nature; the frog as a symbol of renewal; and hands, representing people. Although it is a project that goes beyond aesthetics, we have taken care of every detail of the production, so that it transmits a message to future generations.”
