Amid Kenya’s extreme droughts, a farmer decided not to sit idly by and watch wild animals suffer.

Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua, known as “the water carrier of Tsavo,” has dedicated his life to bringing water to wild animals struggling to survive.

For years, Patrick has traveled long distances with his tanker truck to bring water to wild animals struggling to survive the intense droughts that hit Kenya’s Tsavo National Park. Elephants, zebras, buffalos, antelopes, and even birds depend on these routes to stay alive in seasons where natural sources of water practically disappear.

    A gesture that saves lives

High temperatures and a lack of rainfall have transformed much of the region into an increasingly hostile territory for wildlife. With his truck, Patrick travels long distances within areas of Tsavo National Park, where elephants, zebras, buffalos and other animals depend on his help during droughts.

From one man to a global movement

Patrick’s story quickly transcended Kenya’s borders. International media, environmental organizations, and thousands of people around the world began to share his work, promoting support campaigns and donations to continue the initiative.

    Powerful Lesson
You don’t need to be a great organization to make an impact. Sometimes a single person with determination can make a difference. Patrick not only transports water… He carries hope in the midst of droughts.

The story of the “Tsavo waterman” also works as an awkward but necessary reminder: Climate change is no longer a future scenario, but a reality that is modifying entire ecosystems and putting the lives of thousands of species at risk.
