Graphic Design in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Are we confusing image generation with design?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming graphic design by speeding up creative processes, but, it has also presented challenges that are worth discussing:

    1. The loss of creative judgment in the face of automation.

    2. The uniformity of the visual identity of the brands.

    3. The false idea that generating an image is equivalent to designing.

With the technology boom, people have confused the ease of creating graphics with the ability to design. The advent of AI has accelerated that perception.

Tools execute, but they don’t understand a brand’s context, strategy, or goals. Companies still believe that designing is “making something beautiful.” In reality, design is about solving problems, communicating ideas and generating experiences. A good designer researches, analyzes the user, makes decisions, and builds solutions; the visual aspect is just a part of the process.

That doesn’t make AI a “crime,” but it also doesn’t make the individuals that use it graphic designers.

AI was created to empower human capabilities. It is a tool and process facilitator. It does not replace judgment, creativity or strategic thinking.

Today many graphic pieces are begining to look the same; saturated with information, with repetitive compositions and an aesthetic generated from the same references. It is true that not all companies have the budget to hire an in-house graphic designer. In these cases, tools such as Canva or AI are great options for moving an idea forward. However, using these platforms also involves developing criteria; understanding the basic principles of composition, visual hierarchy, color and communication, rather than assuming that an AI-generated image is automatically a good design.

If a company has the possibility to invest in a professional and decides to replace them with AI or other tools so as to reduce costs, they should seriously consider what they are sacrificing. A designer not only creates visual pieces; they research, analyze the audience, build a strategy, and turns a message into an experience that connects with people and generates memories. This process can hardly be summarized in a prompt.

Artificial intelligence is a tool to enhance creative work, not to justify staff reductions. If each post ends up resembling the previous one, if all campaigns use the same aesthetics and if a single image tries to communicate everything, the problem is not in the technology, but in the lack of judgment with which it is being used.

The real challenge in graphic design, lies not in generating more content, but it creating pieces that are worth remembering.
