    How Long Did It Take Big Companies to Become Profitable?

    Some of the companies dominating their respective industries today were in the red for years — often for more than a decade. 

    Google started making a profit relatively quickly, but it took Uber, Tesla, and Spotify more than a decade. 

    Comparing profitability between companies requires taking different internal accounting metrics into consideration. Still, these are the first profitable years reported by six major technology companies.

    Google: approximately 3 years

    Founded in 1998, Google became profitable in 2001, after the launch of its AdWords advertising business.

    Amazon: approximately 9 years

    Founded in 1994, Amazon closed 2003 with its first annual profit, after years of prioritizing investment, infrastructure and growth.

    Netflix: approximately 6 years

    Netflix was founded in 1997 and didn’t become profitable until 2003. That same year the streaming platform reported its first quarter with net profit under the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

    Spotify: approximately 18 years

    Founded in 2006, Spotify closed 2024 with its first full year of operating profit, one of the most important financial milestones since its inception.

    Uber: approximately 14 years

    Uber was founded in 2009 and recorded its first year with operating profit in 2023. That year also ended with a positive net profit.

    Tesla: approximately 17 years

    Founded in 2003, Tesla achieved its first full year with positive net profit under GAAP criteria in 2020.

    Some companies made a profit in just a few years, while others spent more than a decade financing growth, technology, infrastructure or expansion before making a profit.

    Taking less time to be profitable doesn’t necessarily mean having a better business strategy. Rather, the different timelines for these giant companies show that growth and profitability do not always advance at the same pace. Behind some of the world’s largest companies were years in the red.
