{"id":20749,"date":"2023-07-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-04T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tomilli.com\/en\/hiki-and-getty-images-campaign-combats-visual-stereotypes-of-the-autistic-community\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T10:42:57","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T15:42:57","slug":"hiki-and-getty-images-campaign-combats-visual-stereotypes-of-the-autistic-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tomilli.com\/en\/hiki-and-getty-images-campaign-combats-visual-stereotypes-of-the-autistic-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Hiki and Getty Images Campaign Combats Visual Stereotypes of the Autistic Community"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em>#AutisticOutLoud aims to deliver new visual content depicting the resiliency and diversity of the autistic community.<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hikiapp.com\/\">Hiki<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest friendship and dating app for the Autistic community, has partnered with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/\">\u00a0Getty Images<\/a>\u00a0(NYSE: GETY), a preeminent global visual content creator and marketplace, to launch\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/custom.gettyimages.com\/autistic-out-loud\/p\/1\">#AutisticOutLoud<\/a>, a Custom Content initiative to increase authentic representation of autistic people through the lens of the community.<\/p>\n<p>Today, about 15-20% of the population worldwide is considered to be neurodivergent, spanning different genders, ages, races, and more.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindshareworld.com\/news\/autisticoutloud#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>\u00a0Bringing in content creators and photographers who identify as autistic, the #AutisticOutLoud campaign features a curated gallery of images and videos that show the diversity and resilience of the community. The creators will also become part of Getty Images\u2019 global contributor network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe autistic community is not a monolith,\u201d says Jamil Karriem, Founder and CEO, Hiki. \u201cYet in media and entertainment, they\u2019re often infantilized or stereotyped as savants with a voice that typically centers the experience of white males. At Hiki, our mission is to connect all people across the autistic community, and give them a place where their identities and lived experiences can be honored and validated. A crucial part of that is for the autistic community to be seen for all of their tremendous differences and nuances as unique individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hiki is working with a cross-agency WPP team, led by global media agency network Mindshare, who has led the partnership with Getty Images. The WPP team also includes agencies VMLY&amp;R and Set Creative working on creative branding, strategy, and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking in media and as someone who is autistic, I was tired of seeing the regressive, disempowering images of autistic folks in mass media that are at odds with the community I know \u2013 one that is highly expansive and creative,\u201d says Rachel Lowenstein, one of the autistic content creators featured in this campaign and a lead on this project as Global Head of Inclusive Innovation, Mindshare. \u201cI\u2019m proud of this project as an opportunity for our industry to reshape media to be more representative to a community that has long been spoken over and for, by centering our own expressions. That\u2019s why we called it #AutisticOutLoud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Building on the work Getty Images has undertaken to accurately represent the disability community at large, content created as part of this initiative will live on<a href=\"https:\/\/creativeinsights.gettyimages.com\/en\/repicture\/our-partnerships\/the-disability-collection\">\u00a0Getty Images\u2019 Disability Collection<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/\">\u00a0Unsplash<\/a>, and will be available for commercial use by media platforms and publishers worldwide to help drive awareness in the industry.
