The initiative was launched in Necochea more than six years ago by Ingrid Christensen Balsategui, who studied Diagnostic and Environmental Management, and Ezequiel Rola, an industrial designer. From their respective areas of knowledge, both found recycling an opportunity to develop concrete solutions to one of their city\u2019s main environmental challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From environmental problem to tangible solution<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Necol\u00f3gica\u2019s creation started with the existence of an open-air landfill in Necochea and the impact that improper waste disposal generates on the environment. The company currently transforms the waste from this landfill into products made from 100% recycled plastic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Our contribution is to try to ensure that the least amount of plastic ends up deposited there or contaminating other environments in the city, such as the sea, the river, the park or the streets.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its early years, the project focused mainly on raising awareness of local environmental issues, especially those related to waste management. However, its founders decided to go one step further and build a concrete solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The main motivation was to start doing something concrete that would contribute [to a solution],&#8221; explains Ingrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To develop the project, Necol\u00f3gica established an alliance with a workshop in the city that promotes labor inclusion for people with disabilities, and that, for more than 30 years, has been working with recyclable materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop receives the waste, classifies it, parcels it, grinds it, washes it and dries it. Subsequently, Necol\u00f3gica acquires the plastic already transformed into flakes and uses it as a raw material to manufacture its recycled materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This work structure combines environmental impact with a local value chain that also promotes social inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Turning recycled plastic into a business opportunity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom the moment we decided to start a recycling business, we saw it as a business opportunity. We are working to make it so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, turning this possibility into a competitive model has involved different challenges. Among them, developing the necessary technology to transform plastic into high quality materials. There was the technical challenge of building the necessary machinery to manufacture the material. The machine currently used by Necol\u00f3gica was developed by its own founders, largely by Rola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cManufacturing it from scratch, putting it into operation and making quality blocks was a whole process in which there were many challenges, mistakes and lessons.\u201d After several years of experimenting with and improving their materials, the company managed to specialize in the manufacturing of blocks of recycled plastic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to extending the useful life of waste, the blocks developed by Necol\u00f3gica offer advantages over traditional materials such as wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Plastic does not require treatment, humidity does not affect it, it does not need to be painted, it will not swell and it is not attacked by insects.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to its strength and low maintenance, these plastic blocks can be used in spaces where other materials tend to deteriorate due to humidity or use. At the same time, the use of recycled plastic as an alternative to conventional materials can contribute to reducing the consumption of natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are reducing the consumption of natural resources, such as wood, concrete and metal.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although, as Ingrid says, \u201cthe number one challenge is Argentina, basically,\u201d referring to the economic and political instability that forces companies to adapt constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Innovating from a material that many consider waste<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Necol\u00f3gica, innovation means introducing a new material to the market and demonstrating that waste can be turned into functional, durable and visually appealing products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The idea is to bring something to the market that does not exist today, and to demonstrate that, from recycled plastic, you can obtain products of excellent quality and design, functionality, that are very durable and require little maintenance.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the main challenges has been to change the perception that recycled products have a simple appearance or inferior quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We want to show the market that, just because it is recycled plastic, does not mean it has to be something ordinary or of poor quality, but that you can make top quality products [from recycled materials].&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Necochea, a coastal city in the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina), plastic waste is finding a second life.
