Comparing profitability between companies requires taking different internal accounting metrics into consideration. Still, these are the first profitable years reported by six major technology companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Google: approximately 3 years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Founded in 1998<\/strong>, Google became profitable in 2001, after the launch of its AdWords advertising business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Amazon: approximately 9 years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Founded in 1994<\/strong>, Amazon closed 2003<\/strong> with its first annual profit, after years of prioritizing investment, infrastructure and growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Netflix: approximately 6 years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Netflix was founded in 1997<\/strong> and didn\u2019t become profitable until 2003<\/strong>. That same year the streaming platform reported its first quarter with net profit under the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Spotify: approximately 18 years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Founded in 2006<\/strong>, Spotify closed 2024<\/strong> with its first full year of operating profit, one of the most important financial milestones since its inception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Uber: approximately 14 years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Uber was founded in 2009<\/strong> and recorded its first year with operating profit in 2023<\/strong>. That year also ended with a positive net profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tesla: approximately 17 years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Founded in 2003<\/strong>, Tesla achieved its first full year with positive net profit under GAAP criteria in 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some companies made a profit in just a few years, while others spent more than a decade financing growth, technology, infrastructure or expansion before making a profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Taking less time to be profitable doesn’t necessarily mean having a better business strategy.
