It began with motorcycles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before founding Magic Shields, I worked in motorcycle engineering, where protecting people from the risk of impact is a fundamental challenge. That experience changed how I looked at safety. I realized that the principles used to absorb impact in motorcycles could be applied to the societal challenge of preventing fall-related injuries among older adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A single fall can change a person&#8217;s life. Hip fractures often lead to a loss of independence, increased caregiving needs, and significant emotional and financial burdens for families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That realization became the foundation for Magic Shields. Rather than asking older adults to become more careful, we asked a different question: <strong>What if the floor itself could help protect people?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How does a surface remain firm and stable underfoot while still absorbing the impact of a fall?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the core innovation behind <strong>Magic Shields Floor &amp; Mat.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike conventional soft mats, <strong>Magic Shields Floor &amp; Mat<\/strong> behaves differently depending on the type of force applied. During normal walking, it remains firm and stable, providing confidence and balance. When a sudden impact from a fall occurs, its internal structure deforms to absorb energy and reduce the force transmitted through the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than simply making a softer floor, we engineered a surface that responds differently to everyday movement and unexpected accidents. We worked closely with engineers, physical therapists, and university researchers because solving this problem demanded more than material science alone. Walking stability, gait mechanics, and impact behavior all needed to be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout development, we repeatedly tested prototypes to find the balance where users would not notice instability during everyday movement, but would still receive meaningful protection during a fall. That balance became the defining characteristic of Magic Shields Floor &amp; Mat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Japan has a rapidly aging population. How has this demographic context influenced the development and adoption of your technology?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan is often described as a super-aged society, and that reality shaped everything we do. The increasing number of older adults has made fall prevention one of healthcare&#8217;s most important challenges. At the same time, caregivers and healthcare providers face growing pressure to improve safety without reducing quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than limiting people&#8217;s movement, we wanted to preserve independence for as long as possible. Today, Magic Shields has been introduced in more than 1,600 hospitals and care facilities across Japan, helping create safer environments for both residents and caregivers. The lessons we&#8217;ve learned in Japan are becoming increasingly relevant as many other countries begin facing similar demographic changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Real Installation in a Japanese Care Facility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tomilli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-5-1024x682.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18797\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5028901734104045;width:508px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Magic Shields Floor &amp; Mat installed beside a hospital bed in Japan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking ahead, could smart surfaces combine impact absorption with sensors capable of detecting and responding to a fall in real time?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Absolutely. We believe that protective surfaces are only the beginning. In the future, floors could become intelligent platforms capable of detecting falls, notifying caregivers, and contributing valuable data to improve care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our current priority remains delivering reliable physical protection, but we see significant potential for combining material innovation with digital technologies to create safer living environments. The future of healthcare will not depend only on devices that people wear.
