At first, it seems like an absurd idea. However, this curious invention, named “Clocky,” has become one of the most creative examples of how design can solve an everyday problem.

The device was created by Gauri Nanda, a student at the MIT Media Lab, who was looking for a solution for those who constantly press the snooze button. The idea was simple but effective: an alarm clock with wheels that, after sounding, can jump from the table and move around the room, forcing the user to get up and chase him to turn it off.

The interesting thing is that this apparent madness ended up becoming a phenomenal innovation. The prototype quickly went viral on blogs and tech media, transforming a university project into a commercial product that was sold around the world. Its design demonstrates how a simple solution can capture global attention when it connects to an everyday problem.

Beyond the curious nature of the product, Clocky reflects a trend in contemporary design: introducing small “frictions” to change user behavior. Instead of facilitating user’s ability to snooze, the alarm clock turns the act of waking up into an inevitable action.

Proof that, in innovation, ideas that at first seem absurd often end up becoming memorable solutions.
