For years, the fashion industry and vegans have sought alternatives to animal skins. However, many of the options on the market continue to be made from petroleum-based plastics such as polyester or polyurethane, materials that can release microplastics and have a high environmental footprint.
That is where BioFluff comes in.
BioFluff is a startup that specializes in the development of biomaterials for the fashion industry. The company strives to demonstrate that it is possible to create luxury textiles without resorting to animal skins or plastic materials. To this end, the company developed Savian, a new generation of fabrics inspired by nature, manufactured entirely in Italy.
Unlike many alternatives on the market, Savian doesn’t just replace animal skin with plastic. Its proposal consists of completely rethinking the material, taking advantage of the natural structure of vegetable fibers to obtain volume, texture and a smoothness comparable to that of synthetic hair, teddy fleece or traditional shearling, known for its sheepskin-like finish.
BioFluff does not reveal the exact makeup of its technology, but it explains that the material is made exclusively from natural fibers, without genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or toxic chemicals. In addition, it was designed to respond to one of the main challenges facing the textile industry: reducing dependence on petroleum-derived materials and avoiding the release of microplastics during garment use.
Savian can be used for coats, jackets, bags, footwear, accessories and even decorative elements, offering an alternative for brands seeking to reduce the environmental impact of their collections without sacrificing the aesthetics and performance of traditional materials.
According to the company, Savian can reduce CO₂ emissions by 40% to 90% compared to equivalent conventional materials. In addition, its manufacturing processes were designed to be integrated into existing industrial systems, facilitating its scalability and eventual adoption by the industry.
Rather than developing a new fabric, BioFluff seeks to rethink the way biomaterials are designed for fashion, focusing on plant-based materials that reduce dependence on plastic without compromising performance or aesthetics.
