For decades, the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) project has been associated with one of humanity’s most fascinating questions: Are we alone in this universe?
What many do not know is that the project is still active, although it’s evolved significantly since its beginnings.
SETI started by looking for possible radio signals from extraterrestrial civilizations. Today, thanks to Artificial Intelligence and massive data analysis, SETI can process huge volumes of information with much more precision.
One of its main instruments, the Allen Telescope Array, continues to scan the sky for unusual patterns that cannot be explained by known natural phenomena.
The initiative also promoted flagship projects such as SETI@home which enabled millions of people to lend the processing capacity of their computers to analyze spatial signals and collaborate with scientific research.
Have they found intelligent life? So far, there is no confirmed evidence. However, every piece of data analyzed helps refine the search and better understand where to look.
Far from disappearing, SETI continues to evolve with new tools, more analytical capacity and increasingly advanced strategies.
The question remains the same; the difference is that we now have better ways to try to answer it.
