Stable Diffusion – Harnessing the Creative Power of Generative AI

Generative AI is revolutionizing the way we design – offering a new set of opportunities for content creation. Silicon Valley’s newest craze uses prompts to curate ultra-realistic images for workshopping and internal production. Outputs are instantly produced and often of higher quality – making it an indispensable tool to the future of graphic design.

Realizing Al’s creative potential – BBDO rolled out Stable Diffusion, an advanced text-to-image generator. Since making the tool available for all employees, we’ve learned ways to maximize the platform’s potential.

CHANGING THE WAY WE BRAINSTORM

While the tool itself has yet to be used in a finished campaign, it’s proven useful while visualizing campaigns and drafting slide deck artwork.

“It’s not just a tool for output – it’s a tool for exploration of the idea,” said BBDO Head of Digital Production James Young.

The program offers an additional point of view during the brainstorming process, enhancing the way we conceptualize, sketch, and pitch ideas. “Being able to just quickly visualize without having to spend time sketching it—I think it’s really going to cut down so much of the tedious tweaking and fixing and that manual labor part of it,” BBDO NY Creative Director Martin Staaf said. “That is going to allow us to focus more of our time on the ideas and the conceptual components.”

When working with any new technology, user error can obstruct effective usage. It’s important to understand how to speak to the platform’s algorithm using specifically worded prompts. “Stable Diffusion doesn’t have a lot of refinement built into it, so you need to be very specific in crafting these kinds of text prompts—it’s like learning a new language, figuring out what the algorithm and the AI understands and what it doesn’t,” said Staaf.

LEANING INTO CREATOR COMMUNITIES

While this technology continues to develop, online communities can be a helpful resource to create a ‘user manual’. Leaning into the massive online following of other users will help creators ensure they’re maximizing program capabilities. Coding tips and personal experiences are frequently shared on Reddit and other discord channels. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE FUTURE OF CREATIVE WORK As AI continues to play a pinnacle role in creation, “It kind of lowers the barriers for all of the visual expression,” Staaf said. This rapidly evolving space can have transformative abilities if agencies are flexible and receptive to this new technology.
