The area known as “El Caracol”, in the department of Rocha, is a subdivision located immediately after the raft crossing of the Laguna Garzon bar.
It takes place between Route 10, which acts as a promenade with the Atlantic Ocean, and the coast of Laguna Garzon.
Since 1976 the territory of Rocha and other departments in the east of the country, make up the so-called Bañados del Este Biosphere Reserve.
A biosphere reserve is an ecologically representative and internationally recognized land, coastal or marine protected area within the framework of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program.
