Reflections From Creative Coaching By 2022 Mentee Simba Mwamuka

Coaches: Waithera Kabiru, Head of Media Futures at Diageo/EABL Plc, Nairobi; Taras Wayner, Global President, Creative Platforms & Solutions at GroupM, New York and Gavin Simpson, Independent Creative Consultant, Kuala Lumpur.

Simba shares his learnings:

As a firm believer in the power of design and innovation as tools for change, I was blessed with the rare opportunity of being mentored by 3 phenomenal creative leaders with a wide range of influence, from different spectrums of the world and with a combined experience of over 60 years in marketing, advertising and communications.

Having built my career predominantly working within the Southern African context it was a great experience to learn and gain more insights from Waithera, Taras, and Gavin. Each session was loaded with content, meaning, insights, challenges, and most importantly, growth.
Fast-forward to today.

I’ve gained invaluable advice and resources that have impacted and helped improve the way I see and understand the marketing and communications landscape. Countless debates, discussions, and assignments later, my key takeaways from the program are:

· Belief comes first, winning starts within. If you believe in your idea first, it’s easier for
others to do so as well.
· Always be willing to challenge your already existing beliefs in order to grow.
· Relationships are key. Always strive to build stronger relationships with your clients, it helps foster a better understanding of the solutions we create and breaks the “creative vs client” barriers.
· Every solution we create, needs to always be data-driven in order to guarantee ROI (return on investment) for clients.
· We need to fully embrace and harness the power of AI in order to work smart, not hard.

It’s safe to say that being a part of the 2022 Creative LIAisons was nothing short of a blessing. I’ve managed to foster personal relationships with each one of my mentors and was fortunate enough to have met Waithera in person at the Loeries in Cape Town. I would really love to meet Taras and Gavin someday in person.
